Why Watching a New National Netball League in Action on TV Is Beneficial
A new era of netball is set to begin in Australia on February 18, 2017.
This date will mark the start of Suncorp Super Netball, a new netball competition among eight teams.
A league transformed
The new Australian national netball league first stemmed from Netball Australia’s announcement in May 2016 that it would be parting ways with Netball New Zealand and the ANZ Championship.
Eight teams emerged as the members of this new league: the five existing teams (the Adelaide Thunderbirds, Melbourne Vixens, NSW Swifts, Queensland Firebirds and West Coast Fever) plus three new teams (Giants Netball, Magpies Netball Club and the Sunshine Coast Lightning).
Five members of the Australian Netball Diamonds, the country’s national netball team, have joined one of the new teams (Collingwood Magpies Netball) for the inaugural season: Sharni Layton, Kim Ravaillion, Madi Robinson, Caitlin Thwaites and April Brandley.
The inaugural match will pit Giants Netball against the NSW Swifts at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre.
A welcome change
One key detail among the changes and events brought about by the new national netball league is that broadcast partners, Nine Network and Telstra, were introduced.
This means that the Suncorp Super Netball competitions would be televised — two games live each week on the Nine Network and the remaining two games live through Telstra TV.
